Intermission

The summer of Canada.

I’m back from the stunning Banff National Park. I mean, if the view from the highway was this good, just imagine what you can see after hiking in for a few miles. Very impressive scenery.

I have about two weeks until I head back to Canada, but this time I’ll be visiting Ontario and Quebec with this babe I know. I would love to get suggestions from any Canadian readers (or Canada aficionados) for cool places to see or good veggie places to eat in Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, or Quebec City.

Also, while I was gone, Em from Ice Cream Cone Life posted a little interview with me. Check it out here.

From the Hip Friday

Cash transaction.

Today’s photo from the hip is by Molly. She sneaked this shot while in the market in Hoi An, Vietnam. I like how she managed to capture the vendor handing back change. I also like to think the vendor might be friends with this lady.

Thanks, Molly!

Call to Prayer.

5 times, daily.

A while ago I was chatting with a friend online when she suddenly had a funny facial expression and asked, “What is that?” I smiled and explained, “That? That would be the call to prayer!”

While I was staying at Mike’s apartment, I had the pleasure of living directly above a mosque. This allowed me to have a daily front row seat to the prayer call action. It also meant that if I didn’t leave the apartment before 12pm on Friday, I’d be trapped. Men would be overflowing from the mosque and spreading their prayer rugs along the sidewalk. Because it is not permissible to walk in front of someone while they’re praying, I literally could not leave the apartment lobby.

Along the bottom of the picture you can see why I couldn’t leave the building. The entire sidewalk is blocked.

I took a little video to give you an idea of what the front row action was like. If you’ve never heard a call to prayer, this is what it sounds like in Abu Dhabi.

Translation:
God is most great.
God is most great.
There is no god except God.
There is no god except God.
Mohammed is the messenger of God.
Mohammed is the messenger of God.
Come to prayer.
Come to prayer.
Come to salvation.
Come to salvation.
God is great. God is great.
There is none worthy of worship except God.

Baby Kitties of Laos

The dogs stole the scene.

Sadly, the cat sightings in Laos were few and far between.

Much to Mike’s delight and my disappointment, the country was full of dogs. Have I mentioned that dogs tend to make me nervous? It’s probably because when I was a very little girl I’d walk up to them and deliver a good kick.* Now, I’m pretty sure all the dogs of the world are plotting against me.

But luckily all of these dogs were nice, and pretty cute too.

And that is finally the last of my Thailand/Laos trip!

*Don’t worry. My mom was appropriately mortified.

From the Hip Friday

Shopkeeper.

Today’s photo from the hip comes from Rachel at Parsnip. She’s an English lady who married a Scottish man and blogs about their adventures.

Rachel submitted this photo that she took in the Thamel district of Kathmandu, Nepal. She says that this shopkeeper couldn’t resist mingling with his buddies in the street…even if it meant leaving his shop unattended and customers waiting. I love how you can clearly see that Rachel is inside the shop and the shopkeeper is not!

Thanks, Rachel!

On the road.

again.

Heading to Banff National Park via the lovely city of Bellingham. I scheduled a few posts for while I’m gone, so stick around!
