Christmas in the Mid East…

“…is a gift God wrapped in beige!”

Molly and I really enjoyed reading all of your comments about our little digital Christmas card. We had a lot of fun filming it, and a little less fun (for me) editing it all together. I never thought I’d want to thank Brenda White for recording that little localized holiday ditty.

Christmas in the Mid East

Christmas Eve was supposed to be spent in the kitchen making family dishes at a leisurely pace. I was to make my mom’s macaroni and cheese dish while Molly made her mom’s cinnamon rolls. Instead… much of the night was spent finalizing our video. Believe it or not, we did many many takes of that song and what you heard was the best. Later I did make the mac and cheese… however, the soymilk I used was secretly sweetened and it was a bust. When Molly returned from a holiday party she whipped up the cinnamon rolls with just a little help from me, finishing just seconds before Christmas.

Christmas morning Molly and I sat around the Christmas tree (my Eric Carle advent calendar) and unwrapped our packages from home. Thanks for sending goodies our way! Then we tidied up the place and ourselves to head out to a Christmas breakfast. Our breakfast was just the start of a food filled day. We had cinnamon rolls, eggs, pancakes, fruit, bacon (for them!), and mushrooms.

Christmas Breakfast

We piled in the car and headed out for a Christmas meal in the desert. Frances organized a little holiday gathering with amazing food! I was full after the first few bites but kept on eating. Later in the evening I called home on the phone while Molly skyped with her family. I must say, it was great to talk to loved ones and get a glimpse of Molly’s little brothers in their baby kanduras.

Christmas Dinner

Overall, it was a nice holiday. Nothing like being at the Kessler’s on Christmas Eve. Nothing like Christmas morning with my mom, sister, aunt, and uncle. And nothing like Christmas late morning with my dad and Toni. But… all things considered, it went well.

Back in the dunes.

“Don’t approach me. I’ll stab you.”

Way back before Molly and I embarked upon our desert based film career, we did a little camping there.

Desert Camping

Sixteen of us packed up our camping gear and found a nice sandy spot in the dunes. It was a pleasant evening around the campfire (minus the one belligerent), complete with rides in a brand new dune buggy.

Full of sand the next morning we headed back to Abu Dhabi, only to be stopped in the road by some wayward camels.

Thanks to Milad for the photos!

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas friends and family! I wish I was there to spend the holidays with you… but instead, here’s a little taste of…

Don’t worry, Molly and I don’t have any plans to quit our day jobs. However, we did amass a small gathering of fans while we filmed. And uh… you might not have been able to tell, but that word that we keep cracking on is “beige.”

Love you all… very much.

Government Cruelty *Updated*

Yes I did just type that.

Currently sitting at the main post office are not one, not two, but THREE packages waiting for me. The tricky bit? The small parcels office closes at 2:00pm.

I finish work at 1:10pm with a 50 minute commute back to town.

Today I arrived at 1:52pm… he left early.

Try again tomorrow…

*Update*

Left school 10 minutes early today and made it to the post office! There were not three but FOUR packages waiting! One is for Frances, but it was still pretty exiting to walk out with my arms full. Thanks to Dad and Toni, Nikki, and Liz! And thanks to everyone who has sent me a holiday card!

Novelty Snacks of Baku

I kind of love these cookies.

One of the joys of travel is seeking out new foods. Being a grazer by nature, I am particularly drawn to the novely snack. Baku turned out to be a snacker’s delight.

Novelty Snack: Pop
Description: A strawberry soda with coconut pulp floating about originating in an Asian country.
Tastes Like: A super sweet sugary drink with chunky gel-like things.
Verdict: Thumbs up!

Tastes Like: Well… a moist banana cake covered in chocolate.
Verdict: Thumbs up! Although each of us was satisfied with just one bite.

Pop Kek Novelty Snack Mosaic.

Novelty Snack: CRAX pretzel style
Description: Your basic pretzel.
Tastes Like: Not much… I think the term “styrofoam” may have been used.
Verdict: Thumbs up! Really, I don’t turn down savory carbohydrate loaded snack foods.

Baku Novelty Snacks

Novelty Snack: Browni
Description: A chocolate brownie with a sour cherry in the middle.
Tastes Like: A very rich chocolate cupcake with a squirt of fruitiness inside.
Verdict: Thumps up!

Baku Novelty Snacks

Novelty Snack: CRAX stick style, cheese flavor
Description: Cheese flavored breadsticks
Tastes Like: Deliciousness… not too cheesey, not too bready… nice and crunchy.
Verdict: Thumbs up! I stocked up on several packets to bring back to Abu Dhabi with me.

Baku Novelty Snacks

Novelty Snack: Tutku
Description: Chocolate and vanilla shortbread with a cocoa filling center.
Tastes Like: Every good thing that’s ever happened to you having a party in your mouth on the first sunny day of spring
Verdict: Thumbs up! Can’t lie… I’m a little obessessed with these cookies. I mean, I dreamed about laying on the floor at the hypermarket surrounded by their little red and white packages. I hoarded as much as I could in my suitcase and have been rationing them since I returned home. Frances swears she found some at the market in the desert… but I’ll believe it when I see it.

Novelty Snack: Kpekep Crackers
Description: Cheese flavored crackers
Tastes Like: Off tasting Ritz crackers covered in a flavorless powder
Verdict: Thumbs down!

Novelty Snack: Schoko-Bannen
Description: Chocolate covered banana
Tastes Like: Um. Gross. Chewy banana mess you can’t bite through and some wonky chocolate to cover it all.
Verdict: Thumbs down! Molly was begging us to eat these… no thanks.

Baku Novelty Snacks

Novelty Snack: Nestle FOR MEN
Description: A chocolate bar FOR MEN!
Tastes Like: Manly chocolate?
Verdict: Unknown… We’re still waiting for any delayed side effects Frances may display.

FOR MEN Mosaic

Over all, mostly positive and only 2 concerns: 1. I now have to manage a cookie addiction (this is new for me) and 2. I’m still trying to figure out why FOR MEN is for men… hmm…

Baby Kitties of Baku

“Oh! Baby kitty!!!”

Ok so I took a few cat photos on this trip. But it’s not like they didn’t enjoy it.

The first kitty we met had some serious mange, but he just needed a little love.

Baku

Yep, he’s kinda up in my stuff right here.

Baku

We found this cat sitting in an arched window sill in the Old City. Quite the sage.

Baku

“He said now if you’ve got some questions
Go and lay them at my feet
But my time here is brief
So you’ll have to pick just three…”

Baku

Baku

This cat was at the market practicing his pathetic face.

Baku

On the street and possibly a bit frightened of the woman shoving a camera in his face. (But secretly loving it, too).

Baku

A few more.

Baby Kitty Baku Mosaic

Towards the end of the trip I think word had spread. The cats knew to start running when they saw me coming… Whatever, baby kitties.
