My favorite signs in Abu Dhabi.

A little chuckle.Just to break up the monotony of a million Australia posts, here’s a little something from Abu Dhabi. Before leaving, I made sure to snap photos of two of my favorite signs around town.

The first:

Fish Oasis – pet store on my block

My first year in Abu Dhabi I passed this sign everyday on my way to work. It never failed to make me chuckle. Just look at the range of pets they are offering. You can get anything from a kitten to a panda to a gorilla. And look how naturally all those animals are mingling together in a beautiful jungle setting. Love it.

The second:

Cheese & Pickles – a corner shop between my apartment and Mike’s

A store devoted to my two favorite foods from childhood? How perfect is that? I never actually went inside but Mike popped his head in once. Apparently, it’s just a regular shop. What a let down.

And just for fun, a little bonus:

Butt Sweet House – everyone’s favorite sweet shop

This one’s a classic but I’ve heard they made a sign change a few months ago.

Of course there were many humorous or somewhat puzzling signs around town, these were just my favorites.

Christmas Past

3 of them. This year this will mark my fourth Christmas spent abroad. It’s always a bit strange to be anywhere other than home for the holidays. It’s especially weird if you are in a country where Christmas is just any other regular day of the year. Happily, Australia closes down for Christmas (just like home!), but it will probably be a scorcher and not the traditional wet weather I’m accustomed to.

Here’s what Christmas has looked like for me over the past 3 years.

2009 – United Arab Emirates

2009 was my first year spending Christmas away from my family. In the days leading up to it, I was pretty nervous. I didn’t know what it would feel like to be on my own. Of course, I wasn’t really on my own because I had Molly there with me and she’s just about as close to family as you can get.

We had to work on Christmas Eve (which is super weird if you’re a teacher) but thankfully Christmas day fell on the weekend. We spent the evening of Christmas Eve making macaroni and cheese (my family tradition) and cinnamon rolls (her family tradition). I accidentally used vanilla soy milk for the mac and cheese. So disgusting.

Christmas morning we opened presents and celebrated at breakfast with Hannah and Jen before driving out to Frannie’s place in the desert. We ate a delicious meal and chatted with our families via Skype.

2009 was also the year that launched our annual Christmas video greetings.

2010 – Jordan

I thought I might go home for Christmas in 2010, but instead I ended up in Jordan with Molly and her sister. We spent Christmas Day driving around trying to find a certain church in Madaba. It was probably one of the most frustrating driving experiences I’ve ever had, but we perserved and made it there in the end.

Later in the day we stopped at the Dead Sea for a swim where Molly performed some Christmas themed synconized swimming. That evening we talked our way into the business center at a fancy hotel so we could get in touch with our families. Unfortunately, not all of the microphones or speakers were functioning so it made it pretty tricky.

After dark we struggled to find our hotel for the night until a police officer jumped in our car and had his police officer buddies escort us in their jeep. This is still hilarious to me and one of Molly’s greatest travel feats. (She asked for help, and she got it!)

We toasted the holiday with some Mickey Mouse sparkling cider and fell fast asleep.

2011 – Vietnam

Last year Mike and I spent both Christmas and New Year’s Eve in Hanoi. We didn’t plan it purposefully that way, but it worked out great both times. Our hotel was across the street from a church so everything was quite festive and merry.

Christmas this year could be characterized by “searching.” Christmas Eve we searched for the perfect meal, and Christmas Day we searched for Skype with webcams. (Having families in different time zones is not ideal.) Luckily, we found both! We also treated ourselves to a famous water puppet show.

I’m looking forward to celebrating Christmas 2012 with Mike in Australia. We’re planning to stuff ourselves and relax by the pool.

A Novelty Snack of the UAE

Or more likely, Oman. There’s a bit of a story to this snack.

Awhile back when I was still teaching in the UAE, I wandered over to the kindergarten portion of the school. I was chatting with one of the KG teachers and mentioned that I was hungry. She the proceeded to dump the contents of a bag out on the table and told me to take my pick. It was the contraband.

Students frequently brought an amazing amount of junk food to school. Chips, candy bars, chocolate sandwiches, etc. The kindergarten teachers took it upon themselves to confiscate the unhealthy food, and now I had my pick of the treats.

I quickly snatched up these Lulu Potato Snacks based solely on the packaging alone. Now, you know I love snacks and I’ve done a fair bit of research. Well, I feel that I can comfortably declare this snack to the have greatest packaging of all time.

I mean, look at those cheeks, the vibrancy of the rainbow, the stars, the color scheme… I love it all.

I ran down to Sarah’s classroom so I could complete an official novelty snack report. It was only just before the hoop reached my mouth that I thought to read the ingredients. Oops. Meat product listed. That’s pretty much an automatic thumbs down for me.

The details are a little sketchy but here’s the offical report nonetheless:

Novelty Snack: Lulu Potato Snacks
Description: Puffed seasoned rings with meat flavor
Tastes Like:
Verdict: Thumbs down!

So sadly, I’ll never know what the snack tastes like. Fortunately, I think the packaging itself is enough.

A happy surprise.

We look so young!*A few weeks ago, or maybe over the summer, I came across these photos of Molly and me. I don’t remember seeing them before. They might even be from my mom’s camera. Nevertheless, it was a happy find.

This is from when my mom visited me in Abu Dhabi way back in February of 2010. We went off on a camping trip to explore Fujairah. In these photos Molly and I are sitting on the steps of a fort that was unfortunately closed that day.

*haha, I know. It was only two and a half years ago.

A Day in Al Ain

Or that time Mike got lice*The first two years I lived in Abu Dhabi I only made a few short visits to Al Ain. I was either visiting the zoo (horrid, horrid place), or staying with a friend overnight before heading to Oman. I didn’t really do much sightseeing.

Finally, with just a few weeks left in the country, I managed to do a bit of proper sightseeing. It was the day I took these engagement photos for some friends. We decided that if we were going out in the dunes, we might as well spend the day in Al Ain until golden hour.

Unfortunately, I didn’t realize that the white balance on my camera was set to something funky. The first several photos I took turned out blue!!

Our first stop was Jebel Hafeet, the most well-known mountain in the UAE. A lot of people think it’s the highest mountain (it’s 1,249m), but actually some other no-name mountain wins that prize (it’s 1,910m).

At Jebel Hafeet it was really windy and hot. We didn’t stay too long. Just long enough to get a few photos and to play on the playground.

Next, we visited the Sheik Zayed Palace Museum. You can wander around the compound and explore many of the rooms. The rooms are decorated in the simple and traditional way so it’s easy to imagine what the palace would have been like 50+ years ago. The palace was built in 1937 and Sheik Zayed and his family lived here until 1966.

Our last stop in Al Ain was at the camel souk. This was an interesting experience. One I would not like to repeat. Basically, we drove up and of course were stared at. Normal. Then we were separated and led to different sections of the souk. One man unlocked a pen and ushered us in. Another man was very angry that this happened. We were then led to a different pen. That’s when one man took my camera and proceeded to take the following photos:

Then he demanded 100dhs ($27). We of course were not going to pay that rate. It started to get a bit touchy so Mike held him off with a few dirhams while we ran for the car. Safely inside the car, Mike noticed that his hands smelled bad. Like, really bad. Like, possibly urine. All from handing back the man’s gutra that was placed on his head. No good.

At this point we grabbed a quick bite to eat and raced into the dunes for the photo shoot. I’d call it a pretty productive day!

*Hehe, just kidding. Mike didn’t get bugs!! But he did refer to that photo as, “Oh yeah, there’s me getting lice!”

A Catarman Trip

From last May.Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about how much I miss my lovely friend, Molly. I mean, I’m having a wonderful time in Australia… but I definitely grew accustomed to having Molly so close by in Abu Dhabi. I guess I got a little spoiled. But since I’ve been thinking about her and our friendship so much recently, I figured I might as well post a few more photos from our catamaran adventure last May. The instax photos are here.

If you remember, Molly was treating me to a boat trip as a thank you for helping her out with a few school projects. It was a great way to spend a hot afternoon!

Thanks again, Molly!
