That’s my snack. (GIVEAWAY!) CLOSED

It’s the thought that counts.

I noticed a little surprise at my corner store a week or two ago. A novelty snack made just for me…

The sighting coincided with a pre-planned giveaway… and now I could send along a little Jilly bar as well. How perfect! Probably should have tasted it before I got so excited and bought 5 bars.

Novelty Snack: Jilly
Description: “Creamy wafers covered in cocoa.”
Tastes Like: Blech. Fake chocolate thinly covering the stalest wafers I’ve ever tasted.

Verdict: Thumbs down!

But no worries! Plenty of other novelty snack goodness abounds inside this Sri Lankan tote bag featuring the Tamil alphabet.

Novelty Snacks of Sri Lanka

Time to get serious.

My novelty snack reporting from Jordan was a little, well, weak. I waited too long to record my findings and the flavors were no longer fresh. That’s why my descriptions were a bit… vague. Like when I described a cheese flavored chip as, “A cheesy chip.” When the time came to snack in Sri Lanka, I took my job a bit more seriously. I even kept a novelty snacking notebook. That’s right.

Novelty Snack: Woodapple Nectar
Description: A juice made from woodapple, treacle, milk powder, and water
Tastes Like: Nothing else I’ve ever tasted. It tastes a bit like apple but also like wood. It’s a thick drink with a bit of a tang.

Verdict: Thumbs neutral

Novelty Snack: Hacks Original Hard Boiled Sweets
Description: A menthol, eucalyptus, and aniseed hard candy
Tastes Like: Something familiar that Mike couldn’t quite place. He thinks it’s a German candy.
Verdict: Thumbs up! *This candy looked so gross to me that I couldn’t even try it. I’m sure it would have been a thumbs down.

Novelty Snack: Vegetable Snack 109
Description: A cassava based snack
Tastes Like: Sweet onion flavored snack with a good crunch. It doesn’t melt on your tongue like you might expect.
Verdict: Thumbs up!

Novelty Snack: Black and Gold Salted Gram
Description: Dried garbanzo beans (chickpeas) with salt and a bay leaf.
Tastes Like: A bit bland. There’s not enough salt on the outside to match the bulk on the inside.
Verdict: Thumbs neutral

Novelty Snack: O-Kay Layer Cake
Description: A mini vanilla layer cake.
Tastes Like: Twinkie meets Poptarts
Verdict: Thumbs up!

Tastes Like: eating Top Ramen raw from the bag with the seasoning

Novelty Snack: Tamdabu!
Description: A vanilla cookie with a chocolate 8 pointed star in the middle
Tastes Like: A cookie you want to eat again and again
Verdict: Thumbs up!

Novelty Snack: Grenadine Ginseng Soda
Description: A “healthy” soda flavored with grenadine
Tastes Like: Cough syrup a little bit
Verdict: Thumbs neutral

Novelty Snack: Chips Cha Cha
Description: A cheese flavored chip
Tastes Like: A cheesy chip!
Verdict: Thumbs up!

Novelty Snack: Snack Mix
Description: A lightly flavored potato snack
Tastes Like: The standard dehydrated potato chip with a salty seasoning that I’ve had in every country
Verdict: Thumbs up!

Novelty Snack: Gringos
Description: A cheese ball that must be popular with Mexican people? We were pretty confused by the choice for spokesmen.
Tastes Like: A not so good cheese on a puffy stale ball
Verdict: Thumbs neutral but you know I finished them off for her

Novelty Snack: Mannix
Description: A wafer cookie covered in chocolate
Tastes Like: It’s the standard chocolate covered wafer you’d find anywhere, nothing fancy
Verdict: Thumbs up!

Novelty Snack: Dance
Description: Chocolate on one side, vanilla on the other
Tastes Like: You want to do a dance right in the middle of a crusader castle even though the flavor is actually kind of off and not so tasty
Verdict: Thumbs neutral

Novelty Snack: Potato Sticks
Description: Tomato flavored potato chips cut into sticks
Tastes Like: The bottom of the chip bag.
Verdict: Thumbs up!

Novelty Snack: Fried Peas
Description: Spiced fried green peas from Thailand
Tastes Like: Crunchy green peas but a bit too spicy for me

Novelty Snacks of Nepal

Mountain snacks.

Novelty snacking has gotten a little out of control. In an effort to not go crazy trying to post them all, I’m limiting the snacking from now on. (Ok, not really the snacking… just the photo taking). A few snacks were edited down from this trip because either I wasn’t present to hear the results, or just plain don’t remember the details.

Here goes:

Novelty Snack: Lime ‘n’ Masala Masta flavored potato chips
Description: “the spirit of a young and vibrant India.” – Lays
Tastes Like: a mixture of Indian spices possibly including cardamon and cinnamon
Verdict: Thumbs neutral

Novelty Snack: Chabaa guava juice
Description: Guava juice with guava flesh
Tastes Like: the juice of a guava
Verdict: Thumbs up!

Novelty Snack: Green Pea Snack
Description: a puffed pea snack
Tastes Like: non-cheesy Cheetos with a slight pea flavor aftertaste with salt
Verdict: Thumbs neutral for Mike, thumbs up for me!

Novelty Snack: Unidentified dried fruit
Description: none
Tastes Like: disgusting spicy chewiness
Verdict: Thumbs down!

Novelty Snack: Peanut butter granola bar trekking snack
Description: peanut butter granola bar designed to provide energy while trekking
Tastes Like: not delicious stale and slightly chewy peanut butter lump with other seeds and bits
Verdict: Thumbs neutral!

Novelty Snack: SunCho
Description: chocolate covered sunflower seeds
Tastes Like: M&Ms, in a good way
Verdict: Thumbs up!

Novelty Snack: Mexican style peanuts
Description: roasted peanuts with chili flavor
Tastes Like: sweet and spicy peanuts
Verdict: Thumbs up!

Novelty Snack: Chippy, garlic and cheese flavor
Description: garlic and cheese flavored potato chips
Tastes Like: nothing spectacular
Verdict: Thumbs up!

Novelty Snack: Nachitas
Description: nacho cheese flavored potato chips
Tastes Like: very stale Doritos
Verdict: Thumbs up! (I’m not picky)

Description: Cream cheese and chives sandwiched between two pieces of Wasa bread.
Tastes Like: Weird fake cheese between two pieces of Wasa bread.
Verdict: Thumbs neutral

Novelty Snack: Lakritsi
Description: A cute wrapper on an unknown piece of candy
Tastes Like: Gross. Flavored licorice.
Verdict: Thumbs down!

Novelty Snack: Patkis
Description: Mint chocolate candy bar
Tastes Like: An Andes mint
Verdict: Thumbs up!

Novelty Snack: Lakritsi
Description: A cute wrapper on an unknown pear and vanilla flavored candy
Tastes Like: Kinda gross pear vanilla licorice
Verdict: Thumbs neutral

Novelty Snack: Lakritsi

Tastes Like: Gross black licorice

Novelty Snack: Fami
Description: A hazelnut chocolate truffle candy bar
Tastes Like: Very rich and creamy hazelnut chocolate

Description: A candy bar named after my dad!
Tastes Like: I don’t know! I made him the official taster and he won’t eat it!
