From the Hip Friday

Tourist poses.

Today’s photo form the hip comes from the Merlion in Singapore. It was quite the hot spot during my visit last May. I took a few photos of the Merlion for myself, and then enjoyed watching everyone else. There were quite a few people striking fairly silly poses. It would be fun to see a collection of tourist photos from iconic sights around the world.

Singapore funhouse.

Today’s photo from the hip comes from Arab Street in Singapore. I really loved the pattern on this table and chairs but didn’t feel like slowing down to take a photo. I didn’t manage to capture much of the table, but I do like the colors on the building from across the street. Plus, the composition makes me feel like I’m walking through a funhouse.

Reflection.

Today’s photo from the hip is another from the Glenelg neighborhood of Adelaide. I was sitting on a bench waiting for Mike and started playing with my camera. What you see is what I got.

School days.

Today’s photo from the hip comes from Singapore. As I walked through the city I think just about every class was out on a field trip. Just seconds before snapping this photo I was actually reading that sign. Then a mother/chaperone summoned all the children and it was all over for me. It made me chuckle. I guess Abu Dhabi style field trip etiquette is alive and well in Singapore too.

Beach bums.

***First, a word about From the Hip Friday. I’ve been going back and forth for several months over whether or not I should lay this weekly feature to rest. But… the reality is that I really love seeing everyone’s less than perfect photos. It’s not often you get to see blurry, out of focus, or blindly composed photos on a travel blog, right? There’s just something that really appeals to me in many of these photographs. So with all that being said, I’ve reached a compromise. From the Hip Friday will now run every other week (opposite of Big Thing Thursday). And like always, if you have a photo you shot from the hip (meaning without using the viewfinder), please share it here!***

Today’s photo from the hip comes from Mike. He snapped it while visiting the beach in Jurmala, Latvia. During the Soviet Era, when high level Communist Party officials needed a little beach holiday they came here. The beach is 33km long and covered in white quartz sand. I can see the appeal! Who knows what Mike’s intended subject was here, but I’m sure it definitely wasn’t the beautiful women. Right?

Thanks, Mike!

Fruity.Today’s photo from the hip comes from Singapore. I was out on a six hour walk around the city when I passed some fruit vendors getting ready to open. This particular vendor was preparing his inventory of rambutan. I couldn’t help but snap a photo.
